Arranged in the splendid interior of the last imperial palace to be constructed in Saint Petersburg.
The palace and its outbuildings contain some 360 rooms, all decorated in disparate historic styles: Neo-Renaissance(reception room, parlor), Gothic Revival (dining room), Russian Revival (Oak Hall), Rococo (White Hall), Byzantine style(study), Louis XIV, various oriental styles, and so on. This interior ornamentation, further augmented by Maximilian Messmacher in 1880-1892, is considered a major monument to the 19th century passion for historicism.
After the October Revolution, the palace became the home of the 'Academics' House' (Дом Учёных), and as a consequence its interior has been preserved better than most of other Romanov family residences. Much attractive tiling and many internal architectural details have been retained. Also preserved has been much of Vladimir's collection of late 19th century porcelain, most of it manufactured in the Imperial Porcelain Factory, and painted or decorated by its leading artists. The collection has been extended to include interesting porcelain from the early Soviet period, including figures of Chaliapin and Nijinsky, as well as vases and dinner services inspired by constructivism.

Saint Petersburg is often referred to as Venice of the North. From the very outset the city was built on water, on numerous islands in delta of Neva River. The combination of the architecture and water in Saint Petersburg, as well as in Venice, has a special charm.
A new perspective on the city can be gained from water-level and the boat trip visit some areas of the city that might not be reached on ground.
Saint Petersburg has more bridges than any other city in the world. And even more bridges than days in the year (near 500), 26 of them are drawbridges. Saint Petersburg bridges across the Neva are drawn every night for the period of navigation for the ships to pass up and down the city's waterways. It is an exciting spectacle which attracts many guests of Saint Petersburg every night. The elegance of some bridges can be compared only with the beauty of the architectural ensembles and majestic buildings of the city.
Of course, the breathtaking view of drawing bridges is particularly impressive within the period of White nights (May-July) when the light evening dusk merges with morning and there is an overwhelming feeling of magic all around the city.
We are glad to inform that the United Conference IVESC-ICEE-ICCTPEA-BDO-2014, which took place from June 30 to July 04, 2014 in Saint-Petersburg on the basis of the hotel Park Inn Pribaltiyskaya Congress center (Korablestroiteley street, 14), was a complete success.
The 10th International Vacuum Electron Sources Conference – IVESC-2014 will be combined with the 2nd International Conference on Emission Electronics – ICEE-2014, with the International Conference on Computer Technologies in Physical and Engineering Applications – ICCTPEA-2014 and with the 20th International Workshop on Beam Dynamics and Optimization – BDO-2014.
The conferences were held by St.Petersburg State University under supervision and support of IVESC International Steering Committee, St.Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology State University, Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Kotel’nikov Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of RAS, Scientific Council of RAS on Physical Electronics, Scientific Council of RAS on Relativistic and High-Current Electronics, IEEE Russia Northwest Section, American Vacuum Society, Interregional Innovative development Center “INNO-MIR”, Russian Foundation for Basic Research and other organizations.
These joined conferences extended the view of key points in technology of electron cathodes and guns (applications of vacuum electron sources; new materials, incl. nano-materials - their production, processing and modern equipment), and gave the opportunity to know about recent results in physics of electron emission (field, thermo-, photo-, secondary, and explosive electron emission, as well as photoelectron spectroscopy), and also about electron beam modeling and optimization, research, development and application of modern computer sciences for applied technical and physical problems.
Dear colleagues, let me briefly summarize of our conferences cluster. Before the conferences started, we have received 615 participation applications. Out of them, the program committee has accepted 480 reports to be presented during the conferences.
So the total number of presentations included in the Program was 480 and were other original contributions during the discussions that added to the success of the sessions. 27 parallel sections were held during three conference days (July 1-3), the first (June 30) and last (July 4) days of the conference were plenary lectures.
The event was attended by over 420 participants (376 registered, about 50 irregular listeners from hosting organizer Saint-Petersburg State University) from 19 countries: Armenia, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan.
The extended abstracts of the participant’s reports comprised three volumes of proceedings with a total 425 papers. And fourth volume of proceedings was composed from 26 selected papers as fully developed contributions.
Unifying four different conferences in one cluster helped, on one hand, to at least partially solve the problem of funding each particular conference. Sadly, the help we have expected from our potential sponsors from Europe, America and Asia did not arrive. As a result, the total budget of the cluster was 4.5 million roubles. 2.5 million of them were provided by St. Petersburg State University, 400 thousand were added by Russian Foundation of Basic Research, another small sum we have received from Almaz Inc. (Saratov, Russia). All the rest of the sum (about 2.5 million) was covered by organizational fees of our participants.
On the other hand, however, unifying the conferences on closely related field of knowledge enabled exchange of ideas and involvement of greater numbers of people in each particular conference – and thus broadening the corresponding scientific communities.
Conference participants were: scientists, researchers, directors and deputy directors of educational institutions, representatives of the teaching staff of higher education institutions; representatives of commercial organizations.
IVESC moves on to Seoul in South-Korea in 2016 (some slides about the IVESC 2016 showed July 4 at closing ceremony), a venue full of cultural attractions and history. Please plan to come. Also, guidelines for referencing and paper submission are published on this site in Proceedings section.
Thank you to everybody who helped make IVESC-ICEE-ICCTPEA-BDO-2014 a successful conference, who expressed an interest and participated in the event!
